EUC Ireland June Event

Following on from the success of the EUC Ireland launch event earlier this year, the second event was held on the last Thursday in June in the Iveagh Hotel in the centre of Dublin.  Once again, the Iveagh Hotel was the perfect location for stimulating good discussions, interactive learning and an ideal spot for networking and drinks within the EUC technical community.

The main sponsor for the event was ThinScale, who have an offering to ensure your endpoints are highly secure and highly compliant, they have an MSP offering and are now concentrating on the Enterprise. This can also secure a windows device that enables a secure connection.

Our second sponsor for the day were Ezeep by ThinPrint who have now pivoted into helping solve all the challenges that come with cloud printing whilst not forgetting their root’s in the VDI / RDS space.

The agenda was set and ready to go unfortunately we had some typical travel delays with Leee Jeffries stuck in a cab from the airport and Micheal stuck in traffic on an extremely slow-moving number 37 bus.

A quick re -jig of the agenda was decided on and we opted for the first sponsor session to kick things off, thankfully Bas Van Goor from ThinScale was ready to go. The presentations are available here to download.

Bas walked us through the ThinScale all-in-one endpoint security & management solution, which allows you to secure your endpoint whether it’s BYOD or re purposing older hardware so that older Windows OS are not an attack surface. This allows the conversion of various thin client operating systems to enable your entire desktop estate to be managed from one complete solution. The solution also enables optimisation of the device as well as providing real time device metrics, to help resolve and pinpoint issues around bandwidth and overall health of the device. This also gives the ability to deliver apps and push updates over the internet so the device can be updated even if it’s not part of the corporate network.

Leee Jefferies kindly made the hop across the small pond from the UK to deliver a GO-EUC community session entitled “EUC Performance Everywhere – Where and How?”. Leee is a veteran in the EUC community who juggles his time as a pre-sales consultant for LoginVSI while also running his own consultancy company and donating his time to such a great community project like Go-EUC a non-profit foundation facilitating research in this space. These community researchers are extremely knowledgeable as they spend hours testing and re-testing various OS applications running continuous iterations to and from patterns, from which they try and make sense of the data. Thus, producing various reports that are invaluable to the EUC consulting community saving them hours as they can refer to their research, helping them make big decisions on projects they are working on.

Micheál O’Dea was next on the agenda, delivering an entertaining session on the “Developer VDI Use Case” where the developers bore the brunt of his sense of humour. Anyone who has had to deal with the requirements from developers in what is normally such a locked down environment when building out a virtual desktop environment knows how tricky this task can be.

It sounded like he had some interesting challenges along the way and working with a multitude of teams to get this over the line, I think he has done well to keep his sanity. He detailed the various hurdles and successes as he stepped through the project in quite some detail. As always, an entertaining session from Micheál as you can see from the choice of slide below.

Finally, Scott delivered the final session of the day before we moved upstairs for some food and drinks and the chance to network and discuss the days topics.

I know Scott from E2EVC and the UK EUC Forum, so it was a real pleasure to get him across to Dubin to present on all things print related, from controlling print drivers at scale to ensuring each user has access to print to the correct printer, no matter where they are located. The new and improved Ezeep print solution will handle everything that ThinPrint was known for in any Citrix VDI deployment, now concentrating on helping businesses deliver printing in a cloud-based environment whilst ensuring document security and control of print jobs.

We ended the day on a high note, with drinks and food at the hotel bar and some great follow-on discussions to the topics covered.

Thank you once again to both of our sponsors ThinScale and Ezeep for making the day possible and to our community members for their attendance and interest in the sessions and technologies discussed. We hope you enjoyed the event, and we look forward to seeing you at the next one.
